root of all evil: which while
some coveted after, they have
erred from the faith and
pierced themselves through
with many sorrows.
1 Timothy 6:10
I started writing of how it annoys me at how this is one of the most misquoted verses in the bible, and misunderstood verses in My paper journal.
It's not even the whole verse that gets misquoted. In fact, everything else in this verse gets ignored. Overlooked.
We'll often see or hear it quoted like this:
" money is the root of all evil." I've discussed this very thing with other's about the misquoted version of the phase, trying to get the to understand that by simply removing the words love of, completely changes the entire meaning. First off, and I just now thought of this. It's not in my paper journal. Any evil that is done with the use of money, and not, by the money, places the blame on the money rather the people who are carry out the deeds, rather for good or evil. Keep in mind, if your going to blame the money for evil, it also is what get praised for good. If your gonna do one, at least keep it balanced and do the other.
I've tried to paint the picture of, pulling out money from my pocket, telling it to go do something that I want it to do, and it has the audacity to not do what I told it to do. Imagine that.
Let's now, with this same illustration just add another person into it. Since the money won't carry out my request, I have to offer it to someone to do what the money would not do.
Now, if your the type of person who's only concern is getting that money out of my hand, and into yours, your likely to do whatever I'm paying for. My request could be something good, or it could be for evil; but you don't care, you just want the money.
Are you starting to see it? If not, let me ask you this: How can money be the root of all evil, when it has no root? People do have a root, it is what it's rooted in that makes the difference. Its garden planting season, have you planted you money seeds yet. perhaps you buy plants already started. Are they in the gardening section of your local store. Tell me where you are so I can come get a few plants, cause my store doesn't have them in stock. Where do I buy a pack of money seesds? Is it in the section where the have the tomatos, beets, carrots, green beans and the rest of the vegetables, or are they in some other section of the store? Are the packets separated by danomanations of 1's, 5's 10,s 20's, 50's, and 100's, or are they all mixed into the same pack? Somebody please tell me! I want a pack of these seeds. I want to start a money garden. Sounds like foolishness doesn't it? That's because it is. But, when looking at it in the context of money having a root, it's not foolish at all, since a root starts from a seed.
Why is it taught this way? The answer that jumps to my mind immediately is, the love of money.
Think about it. If I'm a greedy person, and your a good person that wants nothing to do with evil, then all I have to do is change your perception of money. What better place to start then 1 Timothy 6:10? The only thing I have to do is remove those two little words
love of, and of course ignore the rest of the verse. That's it! that's all that is needed. I might also encourage to just believe me, you don't have to read it, I just read it to you. I just saved you from taking time out of you busy day to read it yourself.
I might even add some other things in there to take you mind off of the words love of, should you read it in your bible anyway. Maybe I'll make you think that it's just the different translations in a attempt to down play it should you discover that I left something out, even though as far as I know has it written just like that in all of the tanslations. But hay! If you just read from your choosen translation, your not going to know that every other translation says the same thing.
Now that the big part is out of the way. Let's see if we could shed a little light on the rest of 1 Timothy 6:10. After the statement, the love of money is the root of all evil: It goes on to say, " some has coveted after, erring from the faith" The biblical definition of "covet" is, "the desire to take pleasure in something that belongs to someone else." The verse finishes up with a warning of what will happen by having a love of money. To desire what someone else has (covet).
",... and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."
I was thinking of including the next verse, but with this one being such a mouth full. I'll end it here. You can look more into this, IF you wish to know what come next.
I would appreciate your feedback or any questions you may have.
